So, it was built by W.H. Hurst in 1912 and he and his family lived there until or shortly after his death in 1929.  Then it was a convent (sic) until c.1970.  Then in 1974 the Northeastern Conference of Seventh-day Adventists bought the old Hurst house along with 532 West 230th Street, an "existing school structure" (sic) (that's got to be the St. Gerard School building).  Then the Hurst house was used as a fancy dorm for visiting Adventists until it was set afire in 1988.  Safe to assume the interior was pretty well gutted because when a facade is bricked up like that the interior is kaput.

Yes -- in the same post!  That link still works for me.  Doesn't it work for you?  (If not, just search the NYT site for "brick house in inwood.")

Oh, sorry, my misunderstanding - I saw the date under the title, and assumed it was an article from today's times.

The link worked fine.  Thanks.

Looks like we have an important New York architect here:

Architect James W. O'Connor also designed the Manhattan College quadrangle (1923) and the Manhattan College Smith Auditorium (1928), both Georgian Revival.

For what the quad looked like shortly after construction, see

Also:

a residence (?) (c. 1913) at
11 Middle Neck Road
Village of Great Neck Plaza (particular zip code is 11020)
Great Neck, New York 11022

There is a thumnail photo at

Things you can do--
a) e-mails from multiple senders to:

New York Landmarks Conservancy
http://www.nylandmarks.org/

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission
http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/html/home/home.shtml

The Municipal Art Society of New York
http://www.mas.org/viewcategory.php?category=4

The Museum of the City of New York
http://www.mcny.org/

Neighborhood Preservation Center
http://www.npclibrary.org/

Forgotten New York
http://www.forgotten-ny.com/

b) Inform the Northeastern Conference of Seventh Day Adventists about what they have on their hands.
http://www.northeastern.org/

c) Go to FDNY and get a copy of the arson report from 1988.  There will photos of the interior damage.
