Disputes involving tenant-shareholders, unit owners, residents, boards, and building management and employees all affect the quality of life within a relatively small community. Frequently, issues involving communication, interaction, noise, odors and a wide variety of lifestyle matters cannot be efficiently addressed through litigation and the court process. This project is an attempt to provide a forum for effectively dealing with such disputes.

Provides therapeutic services on a sliding scale to all members of families affected by domestic violence in order to curtail domestic violence and to help family members change the ways they relate to one another. Services include individual psychotherapy, marital counseling, family therapy, lectures, training workshops and consultation. Referrals and mediation provided.

Provides services to crime victims and domestic violence victims, and prevention services in communities, including nonviolent dispute resolution. Instead of going to court, people involved in a nonviolent dispute can sit down with a trained neutral mediator, tell their story, and work toward a mutually agreeable settlement. If a settlement is reached, these settlements are put in writing and signed by both parties. This becomes a legally binding contract.

Recent activities include protesting against the war in Iraq, working to create local peace zones where students can feel safe from youth violence, and petitioning to create a youth center at an old school on West 145th Street.

Provides housing and community service programs where people can learn about tenant rights, receive assistance with housing benefits, organize tenant associations, and teach tenants how to improve their buildings. In addition, WHIC offers conflict resolution programs where disputes among community residents are resolved.
