Nature in New York City needs your help!
Train to be a Citizen Steward of the natural areas in Northern Manhattan. This new six-session program provides citizens with in-depth training in a variety of ecological subjects so that they can participate more fully in meaningful volunteer projects in city parks and natural areas.
Attend all six sessions to become a certified Citizen Steward. Space is limited — pre-registration is required for each training session. Call 212-360-3329 to register.

February 22, 2004 — Inwood Hill Park
10am - 3pm
Session 1: History of restoration in NYC and Northern Manhattan. Plant communities & ecology of upland forest. Intro to plant identification.
March 7, 2004 — Highbridge Park
10am - 3pm
Session 2: Plant identification: trees and shrubs. Techniques for invasive plant removal. Tool use and safety.
March 21, 2004 — Inwood Hill Park
12pm - 5pm
Session 3: Educating the public - Creating exhibits and presentation materials. Nature centers of the city - Docent volunteers. Educating children - The Natural Classroom curriculum. Salt Marsh restoration, ecology and education.
April 4, 2004 — Inwood Hill Park
10am - 3pm
Session 4: Erosion. Erosion control techniques. Water quality monitoring. Hydrology.
April 18, 2004 — Fort Tryon and Inwood Hill Parks
10am - 3pm
Session 5: Fauna Identification - upland forests and wetlands. Songbird migration routes.
May 8, 2004 — Inwood Hill Park
10am - 3pm
Session 6: Planting techniques. Tool use/safety. Plant monitoring.
