Arriving Inspired, Not Tired

By James Renner
9 January 2004

Green Tortoise BusSince 1974 there has been a coach service that has taken the youth of America from Boston to the West Coast and Central America, with a stop-off point in Washington Heights, on a weekly basis. The pick-up point is in the vicinity of the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. The buses are not authorized to use the station itself.

The coaches used are painted green and date from the 1940s to the 1960s. These were originally used for city transit services such as New York City’s MTA. Seating on these buses is arranged so that there is room to stretch out and sleep. Usually, there may be two drivers so that one will sleep while the other drives. These buses are well-maintained for their passengers. The company’s motto, which is on the back of each coach, reads “ARRIVING INSPIRED NOT TIRED.”

Most of the passengers using the Green Tortoise stay at hostels in cities like San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Boston. Stops en route to these cities include Yosemite National Park and the Grand Canyon. Other locations served by the Green Tortoise Adventure Travel Company are Baja California, parts of Mexico and most of the countries in Central America.

The Green Tortoise Adventure Travel Company is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and can be reached at 1-800-TORTOISE or 1-415-956-7500. For hostel reservations in San Francisco call 1-415-834-1000 and in Seattle call 1-888-4-A-HOSTEL or 1-206-340-1222. Reservations must be made. Call for travel times, information and price quotes. Catalogues can also be requested for future tours. Or visit their Web site.
