For all art lovers, art collectors, and just the generally art-curious, this Sunday, November 23rd from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. will mark the first annual Uptown Arts Stroll in Washington Heights. From West 168th Street to West 207th Street, the doors to civic group organizations, restaurants, and even artists’ homes will be open for the public to view artwork in a neighborhood gaining renown for its artistic community. Even the innovators of this special event, Community Board 12, will have art on display for the public to view at the 11:30 a.m. kickoff breakfast at the Board’s office at 711 West 168th Street (entrance on Haven Avenue).

Martin Collins, chair of the Economic Development Committee of Community Board 12, says about this special event that it will not only feature local creative talent, but also promote the growing community of Washington Heights: “We know there is a growing number of artists in our community and we feel that the Uptown Arts Stroll will bring our community together and create additional opportunities for people to patronize local businesses, community-based organizations, and to support the arts.” Plans are in the works to make the Uptown Arts Stroll a yearly event in the Heights.

One of the fine artists whose paintings will be on display in the Uptown Arts Stroll, Maritza Rivera, explained why she decided to be a part of this special event: “I’m participating because I am a part of a community of artists that live in Washington Heights, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to have people view and possibly buy my work.” Some of the other kinds of art forms that will be exhibited and up for sale include photography, drawings, mixed media artwork, and sculpture. This promises to be an event not to be missed for art aficionados who want to fill themselves in on the work of artists in Washington Heights.

Some places that will be open to the public include the Community League of West 159th Street at 508 West 159th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam, 107 West Restaurant at 806 West 187th Street, Coogan’s Restaurant at 4015 Broadway at 169th Street and Broadway, two-07 Art Gallery at 634 West 207th Street, Blue Evolution at 806 West 187th Street, and The Monkey Room at 589 Fort Washington Avenue. For a more complete listing of artists that will be featured, check out this weekend’s edition of the Manhattan Times or view the Uptown Arts Stroll Guide online.
