Date: January 2004

Jewish Memorial Hospital opened its doors on April 11, 1905, and was known as the Philantropin Hospital, which was run on a nonsectarian basis. Its original location was on the southwest corner of Fifth Avenue and 128th Street.

The hospital then moved to Inwood Hill Park and was renamed the Inwood House of the Redeemer, run by the Magdalene Benevolent Society. On November 22, 1922, the hospital relocated and reopened its doors at Dyckman Street and River Road (also known at the time as the lower Bolton Road). The hospital had 117 beds and stayed in the park until 1933. A dispensary was opened at 84 Sherman Avenue in September 1924.

In 1936 the hospital moved to Broadway and 196th Street where it was renamed Jewish Memorial Hospital in honor of the Jewish soldiers who died in World War One. The Hospital was designed as a ten-story red brick building, contained 173 beds and was modern for its time. The original hospital in Inwood was razed, and the Bolton Road became part of the pedestrian pathways of Inwood Hill Park.

In 1952 the Bronx Maternity Hospital merged with Jewish Memorial. Two years later the laboratory building for the hospital was constructed.

Jewish Memorial operated at its location until 1983, when it was forced to close due to financial difficulties. The building was razed to make way for Intermediate School 218.

Maritza... I think the Dyckman location...which I believe was in the park...closed in the 1930's...I've talked to people who remember it there...but you will first need to find out who has the "new" JMH records if they even do... I have done alot of Genealogy research and I once tried to get hospital records from the 1930's and back and they reacted as if I was crazy... I hope you can find what you are looking for... FYI: I was born there in 1968... Exxpo

I was born there in January of 1959 and my brother in March of 1964. I have a picture of the hospital with my mother waving out the window to my older sister who was on the street below. This was before siblings were actually allowed in to see their mom and new brother/sister!
I was also born at the Hospital in Nov/1961.
Don't know what compelled me ... at this time ... to do a search for where I was born? Glad to have found this webpage, and see others thinking the same. Wish there was a photo. I was born there in 1963 on St. Patrick's Day.
I was a patient there twice in the mid forties: once with pneumonia and once again with an appendectomy. My doctors were, respectively, Dr.lepler and Dr. Shurgin.
I was born there in 1957 and grew up a bit more north at 5009 Broadway. I still live in Manhattan!

Does anyone remember or was anyone deliverd by or operated on by Dr. Norman Bloch at JMH? Any comments appreciated.
2 of my 3 children were born in l948 and l952 at JMH. I remember it as a pretty, clean hospital. I do have a picture (Movie) of my waving to the eldest daughter from my hospital window. I lived on 180th St. Went to PS173, PS115 and then Central Commercial HS which is gone now. Too bad. I also went swimming at Highbridge. I remember 181 St very well. Automat, 5 & 10, Werthheimers. There was also a great ice cream parlor as they were called then. This was on 181 just off Broadway. Yum yum
We lived in the Bronx, Hull Avenue at Gun Hill Road. As my mother used to tell it, she was playing Mah Jong with her girlfriends into the early morning hours, felt the labor pains, didn't say a word to the others (I was her fourth - been there, done that), went home, woke up my father, and the two headed to Jewish Memorial where I was born at 5:32 a.m. on January 18, 1961. There was a snow storm later that day but I refuse to take credit for that.
I was also born at Jewish Memorial in 1941
My first hospital experience (aside from being born) was at Jewish Memorial Hospital. I had my "polio" shot there and had a 5 day hospital stay when I was 9 or 10. I can still remember sitting on the balcony of the hospital waiting for my mother to come and take me home.

I worked at JMH from 74-83 in the lab. It was my first job and the best experience in my life. It was a great hospital and my co-workers were great.
I was delivered by Dr. Norman Block, May 1961
I was born there on January 3, 1945. My birth certificate was signed by Fiorello LaGuardia mayor of NYC. Know anyone else born there the same date?
Vida - if in NY, if you are born in one of the five boroughs, there is a birth index book. Your original birth certificate numbers and your adopted one will match. I was born there in 1971 and just recently found my birth family. I also heard that there was a Dr. Koff, and a nurse named Phyllis who would contact a lawyer when a baby was born and put up for adoption. Hope that helps. Find the birth index, get the name, and start searching. It took me 3 days to find them! And I did it without having to pay a PI
I was born at JMH on December 8th 1953 at 8:50 AM. The doctor was Dr. Robert Hoerd, 146 Central Park West. I have no photos to share but I do have my original birth certificate. I lived at 501 W. 189th Street and went to PS 189, PS 173 and JHS 143

Born at JMH on 18 May 1941 and later my parents took me home on the subway to our apartment on Dykman St. Thnk God for having been born then and there! Fiorello signed by birth certificate.
I was born at Jewish Memorial Hospital on March 8, 1947 the 5th of 10 children. We lived on Nagle Ave till we moved to the "country" Bergen County, NJ in 1950. I was born there in 1970. Like the sentiments of another poster I am not sure why, right now, I decided to look this up--is it that I plan to be a nostalgic old man? Regardless, thanks to all the posters and to the organizer.

I lived on Elwood Street-behind JMH-from 1952(when I was born)until 1955 when we moved to LI. My parents always told the story that in either 1954 or 1955, I broke away from my mother's hand and ran across the ambulance ramp (I guess facing Brdwy)just as an ambulance was pulling out with sirens wailing. I was almosr run over by an ambulance in front of a hospital. Ironic, isn't it? The driver swerved and just missed me. Always wondered waht happened to that hospital. Cheers.
I was born there Jan. 10, 1956 as were both my brother and sister from 1941-44, yes I guess I was an OOPS...

I was born there on January 15, 1957. I am sorry to hear that it is gone.
The hospital closed their doors at the end of 1983. St Elizabeth's on FtWashington Ave also closed their doors at the same time frame. I remember as a youngster taking part in the protests to keep both hospitals open. The building was finally torn down around 1986. I lived right next door until I left for the the Navy in which I'm currently serving.
I was born there on February 7, 1958
I was born in JMH om March 28, 1940, had my broken right wrist repaired there around 1951 and had my burst appendix reoved there in early 1957. I lived in 1 Sickles Street from 1940 to 1963 and in 90 Park Terrace East from 1963 to 1968. I was born there -- with my twin sister on 2/25/59. My grandmother worked as an EKG tech there.
I was born there on October 16, 1963. My mother just recently gave me my original birth certificate, listing the address as "Broadway and 196th Street, New York 40, New York" and that I am a "member of the Babies' Alumni"! I guess we all are...It was stamped with the name "Charles Gellman" as the director of the hospital at the time, and there is a drawing of the building on it. Thank you for maintaining this site!
I was born there on January 14th, 1947. My maiden name was Dreier and my parents were Ethel and Sam Dreier. My mom had red hair and remembered that her room was semi private. She went into labor on the 13th and kidded me that she kept going because she didn't want me to be born on the 13th. I was born a few minutes after midnight. The doctor who delivered me was Dr. Brandt. I lived at 990 E. 173rd Street in the Bronx until 1954 then at 1760 Montgomery Ave. in the Bronx until 1967. Please write if any of this is familiar to you. Thanks
I was born there a few minutes past midnight on 1/14/47. My mom joked that she kept going so I wouldn't be born on the 13th. My parents were Ethel (red haired) and Sam Dreier. I lived at 990 E.173rd St from 1947-54, 1760 Montgomery Ave.from 1954-1967,1722 Undercliff Ave from 1967-68, 639? Kappock Street 1968-71 and Mt. Kisco since 1971. The doctor who delivered me was Dr. Brandt. If any of this is familiar to anyone I'd really love to hear from you, also anyone who knew me from Lydig and Wallace Avenue May-December 1964.Thanks,Gail
I was born the third New Year's baby in Riverdale, at Jewish Memorial Hospital on January 4, 1971. I was mentioned in the Riverdale Press, famous from birth. The doctor was Dr. Hodge(s). All I know about this man is that he had big toe nails according to my sisters who are a decade older than I. I want to locate my birth records. I am wondering if they were destroyed as is the practice in many states after a certain amount of years pass, or if they are sitting somewhere archived. I want to find out about my birth process- if it was traumatic. If anyone knows anything about Dr. Hodge and/or where I can obtain birth records-other than a certificate which I have, please let me know.
I was born at Jewish Memorial Hospital 13th of June 1967.
Dr. Hodge also brought me into the world LOL
I was born in Bronx Maternity in 1953. Still trying to get a copy of my birth certificate.
My brother Stephen was born there on March 9, 1962. My brother Kevin was born there on February 9, 1963. I was born there on July 3, 1964. My mother was very busy in those days. The doctor's name was Leibling. I've heard stories that we lived in the DeSoto Hotel but don't remember any of that. We moved to Huntington Station when I was 6 months old and I ended up out west (Eugene, Oregon) when I was 10. Seattle is now my home.
Oops. Brother Stephen was born March 14, 1962, not March 9th.
I found a picture! The New York Public Library Digital Gallery online had it.... I just did a search for "Jewish Memorial Hospital". It's a long link so I shortened it using tinyurl: http://tinyurl.com/ywklze The hospital is fairly sterile looking (pardon the pun) But has a few Art Deco touches near the top with curved window guards and circular vents. Let me know if you have a problem viewing the picture and I will email it to you. I was born there at 1:06 a.m on March 17th, 1965 and still have the little card that was attached to my bassinet :)
Any1 know how I get dup of birth certificate from Jewish Memorial ASAP???

I was born at JMH on February 26, 1956. I lived in the Bronx for 21 years before moving to Michigan in 1977. What a shame that JMH no longer exists. Thanks to Patricia Mulvihill for finding a great picture of the hospital.

I was born there April 28, 1961 and my brother Dec 5, 1963. I like probably most of you would love to see a picture of the hospital if anyone comes across one.
My daughter was born @ JMH on 3/16/68 & the doctor's name was Sidney Steckel. We lived on Magaw Pl. off 181st St. The good old days w/the automat, Neidicks, Woolworth lunch counter & a great ice cream parlor that was called the Greek Tea Room (I think), RKO theater & we actually walked across the GW Bridge. I was born in 1945 @ St. Elizabeth's on Ft. Washington Ave & now the building is a co-op. Went to school at Mother Cabrini. Now living in Arizona.
I was born there 1-30-51, but moved from WH to Poughkeepsie in 1957. Currently in S.C. My wife was recently scanning my birth certificate, and mused that the hospital was probably gone by now. And now the internet tells me so. Sorry it's gone!
Iwas born March 24 1966. I am looking for birthing records dating back to my DOB.
I remember the jewish memorial hospital because my mother's best friend died of cancer at that hospital in the fall of 1954. My mother would visit her and I would be left in the waiting room in the lobby. I was only 4years old and I can still remember the smell of the hospital. I also remember the terrace on the top floors of the hospital where you could once in a while see a patient. I also remember Ellen's bakery near the corner of Dykman and broadway near Bickfords.Ellen's backery had a screen door and you could smell the apple pies a few blocks away. Down the block near the river there was a ice cream and hot dog vender at the entrance to the park . While you had a mello roll ice cream you could smell the hudson river and watch people fish and sometimes catch an el. Does anyone else remember that area. My dad use to take home movies of me at the park near Seaman and Dykman streets.
I was born there in 1962. We lived on Dyckman St until I was two and then we moved to Brooklyn.

I was born at 4:25pm on December 15, 1957. I had a note to look up Jewish Memoral Hospital as part of my family research but never imagined a site like this.
I was born at Jewish Memorial Hospital on Sept. 27 1944

Born in JMH in 1938. Looking for time of birth. How can i obtain original birth certificate?
Born there 09/25/51. My grandfather was a surgeon there for many years I believe.
Guess I'm the oldest! Born at JMH 6/29/23 when it was at its old location on Dyckman St. (200th St). James Renner's notes said they changed the name when they moved to 196th St. and Broadway. Beg to differ -- my birth certificate dated 7/15/23 indicates I was born in the Jewish Memorial Hospital. In 1939, I had to go to the hospital when it was on Broadway. So I was in the hospital at both locations. Of course, I don't remember the 1923 stay, but I later remember the old building before it was razed -- old and castle-like overlooking the Hudson. Glad I found this site.
My mother's uncle ran ELLEN'S BAKERY on Dyckman street, she remembers it as 213 Dyckman street, and although she is in a nursing home and sometimes has a hard time remembering things she remembers that bakery clearly. Her uncle brought her down from Vermont in the 30's o visit and she remembers all the great baked goods, and all the diferent people coming in all day to buy the fresh-baked bread. Her uncle took her to a Yankee game in the 30's (no doubt she saw Ruth and Gherig) and I took to one in 2001 (she saw Clemens and Jeter).
I was born at Jewish Memorial Hospital on March 1, 1960. My sister preceeded me on April 15, 1957 and baby brother after on December 3, 1963. Our pediatrition was Dr. Greenstein whom my mom thought very highly of. Have to look back at who delivered us.

I know my Mother delivered him at Jewish Memorial Hospital but I can't find any records on his birth and death. I would like to know if there are any records that can be accessed.
I was born there in July 1973. My parents lived across the street from the hospital. My Dad was able to see the room my Mom was in from our apt on Nagle ave. Funny, I had a patient here in Hawaii who was born in JMH a few years ago. Such a small world.
I was born at Jewish Memorial Hospital in 1971. My family lived on the corner of Sherman Ave. and 207th street for about 4 years before moving to 200 Dyckman St. My mom owned and ran Lufelia's Bridal right below. I was born in JMH in 1940, had my tonsils removed there as well in 1943 or '44. My parents always referred to the hospital as Manhattan Jewish Memorial. On my birth certificate there is a handwritten address in the lower left-hand corner. It reads 675 W 187st - which may have been my parent's address or my grandparent's address or an annex of JMH itself. We moved quickly to Dyckman Street and then again, quickly, to THE BRONX - Sedgwick Avenue.
Hi There! Does anybody remember Dr. Karl Kautsky of 440 West End ave.? He delivered me as of 9/22/62 in the JMH. We left the U.S. in 1970 to Germany. I'm writing up my life story and am looking for pictures of the hospital and, if possible, of Dr. Kautsky. Please contact by E-Mail jerry.buchholz@gmxpro.de Thanks!

I was born there on September 12, 1957, and my brothers and sisters were born there as well. My family lived at 10 Hillside Avenue in the Heights till 1964, when we moved across the bridge to Fort Lee.
My grandmother worked there as an telephone operator for 15 years. She'd walk down from Dyckman Street every evening and return every morning. I was alway impressed when I'd see her walking with her bags, sometimes, on her way home, she and I would sit in the park with that fountain for what seemed like hours and I'd get impatient wanting to leave and she's say "shh! watch the people." It is still my favorite thing to do. That was my grandmother's neighborhood and it's how I'll alway remember it.

Hi, I was born there too on May 24, 1974. My mom's doctor was Dr. Hodges and from what my mom told me he did not have a good bedside manner. My mom was originally from New Orleans and moved to New York a few years before I was born. I remember my mom telling me stories of how each time she went in for her check-up she would come out of his office crying. He yelled at her because she had High Blood Pressure while she was pregnant with me and he would tell her that he knows it was because of how she ate because ALL Southern people eat unhealthy foods. Little did he know my father was an absolute health nut and only allowed healthy food to be cooked and eaten in our household. My mom tried to tell him that but he ignored her. Another story about Dr. Hodges is on the day I was born, there was a hockey game on TV and I guess I was taking my time in coming out. The doctor induced my mom's labor and used forceps on me because and I quote, he was going to make sure that he didn't miss his Hockey game. What a jerk!! Sounded like an absolute tyrant as a doctor. I had the forceps marks on my forehead until I was 11. Too bad the hospital is no longer there. Kathleen Bolness

I was born in Jewish Memorial Hospital on October 9, 1963. My father worked in the Fort George Post Office (10040) for many years. We lived on 192nd/st (between Audobon Ave & St Nicholas Ave) and later moved to Wadsworth Ave (corner of 192nd/st. Went to JMH for other medical treatment as well
I was born in that hospital in December of 1968. Every so often, when I ride the bus I try to figure which building it was.
I am doing some research for a medical history. I would love any descriptions that people have of the children's ward particularly around the late 1940s or early 1950s. Also, does anyone remember Harry Wallerstein and have any memories?
I have live in the Inwood Heights since I was 3 years old and Jewish Memorail was the only hospital in the neighborhood at the time and it was great that we had such a faucilty that catered to all people all race. Jewish Memorail brings a lot of memories to my life. My sister useto work in the ambulance and I was allowed to ride with her that was kool for a kid 8 years old. when the Hosptial left it was very sad for those of us that were born or raised there. The best to all that got a chance to experience Jewish Memorial. Bye Denise
I was born here in 1970 and my mom had similar feedback on Dr. Hodges. She said he would yell at her if she ever gained weight (and she is tiny). She once gained two pounds and he asked her: "which is more imprtant your baby or your ice cream.."
I was born there: September 21, 1974.
I was found at 5:15pm on March 25, 1963 in an apartment building in Washington Heights. I was estimated to be approximately one day old. The police were summoned to the building, but were unable to locate my birthparents. I was then transferred to Jewish Memorial Hospital, where I remained until July 2, 1963. I was then placed into foster care. If you were an employee of Jewish Memorial and/or a resident of Washington Heights at this time and have any information (however sketchy) about this case, could you please contact me? Thanks so much.
My mother worked at JMH from about1951 to about 1965 She was a charge nurse on a Medical Floor. Her name was Modesta Hernandez. The name of the Direstor of Nurses escapes me for now but if I remeber it I will post it.
I was born at JMH in Oct. of 1941. Two of my children were born there also. One in July of 1963 and the other Oct. 1964. At the time of the children's birth I received a certificate from the hospital with the wrong birth surname on it. I was told that the other child had left so I could not switch them. The name was Roberts.
Was born there Dec 8, 1964, looking for birth mother named Beverly Garland, and siblings. If you have any information from then please let me know. Thank you!
4 out of 5 of my family were born at Jewish Memorial. Looking for adopted baby girl, born November 1974. No birth records. Can anyone help.
Does anyone know if there was a Jewish Memorial in Brooklyn. I'm looking for a death certificate for someone born at the Manhattan hospital and died within one year at Jewish Memorial in Brooklyn. This was in 1963 so my memory as to the hospital in Brooklyn may be in error. Anyone from the Mary Kelly family who knew me please contact me.
I was born at JMH on December 5th, 1962 at 8:50 in the morning.
I was born at JMH on 5/62. I grew up in Inwood. I first lived off of Broadway & 215th Street and then lived on Park Terrace West. I go back now and then and drive by, while some places are frozen in time, many are not. I don't know who my birth doctor was, but I do remember Dr. Hodge, while opinionated, he did mellow over the years as I also went to him.
I am amazed to read the rich history in each of these postings! My sister and I walked around Inwood in 1993...Jewish Memorial Hospital had already been demolished. I really felt incredible sadness. I was born at the Jewish Memorial Hospital on August 19, 1955. My parents lived at 28 Sickles St...grandparents lived at either 30 Sickles or 36 Sickles Street- the building actually has a name: Lucille...will have to spend a day walking and refreshing these memories. My great-grandmother lived at 52 Arden Street until 1973 when she passed...an apothecary shop was on one corner- Bell Telephone building across the street. There was a terrible neighborhood decline in the late 1960's early 1970's. My sister was also born at the Jewish Memorial Hospital on July 22, 1962. I would be very interested to talk to anyone sharing by birthdate of 8/19/1955.
Born in 1951 in the Bronx Maternity Hospital, merged w/ Jewish Memorial Hospital in 1952. I was adopteed. Looking for natural mom and siblings. I still live in NY. My birth name was Michael Plessinger and my adopteed name is P. Bloom. How can I find my original Birth Certificate? Thanks.
I spent 3 weeks in June 1944 in the Childrens Ward. I had a brain concusion as a result of colliding with a car across Broadway from the hospital. I was being chased by a friend with a monthful of water and trying to avoid geting wet. I remember spending time on a porch, our beds were rolled out from the ward, to get fresh air. The porch overlooked Broadway and Ft. Tryon Park. Also remember getting a small pox vaccine in the late 1940's. My grandmother died there in 1950.
My brother was born at this hospital and is looking for birth records. What brough is this hospital in? Please email me with any records. He was told that the hospital burned down and all the records were lost. Thank you.
I was born at Jewish Memorial Hospital in 1955. Ironically enough, I'll probably be moving "back" to that neighborhood within the next couple of months!
My Brother Howard Berins was born at JMH on 9/1/40. I wasn't born there but I was treated there at about four years old for mono. I can remember those horrible blood tests in a laboratory with cages holding live rabbits. I was also treated there in fourth grade for a fractured elbow. When I screamed about not wanting the novacaine shot, Dr. Braun grabbed my arm, and set it without anesthesia - the volume of screaming increased geometrically. We had a private house on 217th Street, across from Park Terrace Gardens. Attended PS 98, JHS 141 (in Riverdale - we were bussed for racial equality!), Brooklyn Tech, then graduated from GWHS in 1964. Moved to Metairie, Louisiana (suburb of New Orleans) to attend college and law school. I still live in Metairie, as do my older brothers, Howard and Bernard Berins. All of us have wonderful memories regarding spending our entire childhood in Inwood.
I was born @ Jewish Memorial in 1962. My two brothers were born there in 1966 & 1968. The doctors were Dr. Kirzner for the first two and Dr. Hodge for the last. Not sure about the spelling of Kirzner. The name of the practice was Zerner, & Kirzner, later changed to Zerner Kerzner & Hodge. I don't remember where their offices were. We lived across the Harlem River in the Bronx (Morton Place).
I was born at Jewish Memorial Hospital on 11/12/51 and was delivered by a woman, Dr. Ostrand. I was told a story by my mother a very long time ago that I was one of triplets but that my two brothers died of complications at birth or shortly thereafter. Yet I have found no record of their birth or death. It occurs to me that perhaps my brothers were adopted and may still be living. In any event I would like to hear from anyone who may have any information at all, no matter how sketchy, to try and resolve this mystery. Thanks.
i was born in this hospital in 1960 march 22nd and my brother in 1961 july 19th .
I was born in 1960 at JMH delivered by Dr Norman Block. My mom was a nurse there back in the fifties. Dr Block was a very nice man. My mom was very fond of him as were the staff of JMH. Many staff members were cared for by him.He maintained privileges at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, I graduated from there in 1985 and found out that he had a dwindling practice due to his age and impending retirement. He was still regarded as a very nice gentle man.I hope this helps anyone who had any questions. My mom worked with him and knew him prior to my birth. He was well recommended and many people went to him.
Thanks to technology, I am riding over Manhattan and as most of us and I wanted to see the Hospital where I was born. No luck, so I opened my laptop and when on the search. This page with valuable information was the only thing about JMH I found. I would like to have pictures of the Hospital, so please if anyone has an old picture my email address is edianpol_2000[at]yahoo.com. I was born in 12/1976. Thanks.
My son was born at JMH Sept,1952. Dr. Zerner was my doctor. I went to school with Ed Contouris, father of Jamie who also was born at JMH in 1953. I lived at 561 W 189 St.I went to PS 189 grad in 1945. Then my son went in 1958. I recall so much about the Heights A great place to live and grow up in.Now I am in FL. E mail me if you wish.
I was born at Jewish Memorial Hospital May 21,1951.It is May 20,2010 and I was going to try and find information of the hospital.I did not know that it had closed 1983.I do not know the name of the doctor but my parents told me that I was born in such a way that I almost did not live.My parents Donald and Francine Monath lived on Teller Avenue.Steven Scott Monath-sarahmayven5@embarqmail.com
I want to add to my post of 26 August 2007: my delivering physician was Dr. Herbert Zerner.
My mom worked here when I was a small child (the early to mid-70s), we lived on Hillside Avenue, nearby. She worked in the dental clinic and I used to have a great time visiting her there. Her boss was Dr. Asnith (sp?)and he was very good to us.
I was born at JMH Oct.12 1969 and my sister in Sept 1970. We lived at 9 Sherman Ave around the corner from the hospital. My mom just learned how to drive a stick-shift toyota corolla. When she went into labor, she had no other choice but to drive herself to the hospital. Our family currently live in Charlotte, NC and Florida. I was disappointed when it was torn down in 1983. I just found out my High school Norman Thomas (the new Central Commercial) is also shutting down. Too bad!
I was delivered by Dr. Leonardo Yunis Oct 12 1969 @ JMH.
i was born there 10/12/44, delivered by dr. goodfriend.
I was wondering if anyone has knowledge of or the location of any old medical records from the middle to late 40s. I was a patient at JMH Sept. 1946/7 for a compound fracture. If they exist, where they might be located after the Hosp. was closed.
I was Born at JMH on June 7th 1970 to Violeta Vega & Arturo Campa. To God be the Glory!
I was born in JMH on May 23, 1953. I lived at 160 Bennett Ave. I'm not sure who the doctor was. It has been interesting to read various entries, particularly the names of the obstetricians who worked at JHS back then. The names of Dr. Hodge and Zerner brought back many fond memories. Not my birth, obviously, rather the birth of my three children. Dr. Hodge and Dr. Zerner moved their practice to Fort Lee, N.J. and allthough I moved from Fort Lee to Rockland county I gave birth at Englewood Hospital because I wanted Dr. Hodge to deliver my baby. I adored him. His one bad habit was his excessive smoking (for a doctor). That's what took him some time in the "90's". Lung Cancer. I ever put two and two together when he said he had practiced "across the bridge". My sister, Donna was also born in JMH on December 29, 1955 and it was in 1963 in that same hospital that her life was saved by Dr. Howard(?) Millstein. I presently reside in Fishkill, Ny and she in Baltimore, Me. Michelle (Reckitt) DeMarco
I was born August 10, 1955 at JMH to James Sharkey and Lorraine Goin Sharkey. My parents address is listed at 2541 Aqueduct Ave. The doctors signature is hard to read, but I think it says Carlyle Drather, with his address at 1 W. 70th St.
My grandfather, Julian Uribe, traveled from Colombia to New York in 1930 to have prostate surgery at the Jewish Memorial. There he died on August 17th, 1930, at the age of 73. In his correspondence he specifically mentions the Jewish Memorial, so in 1930 the hospital must already have been known by that name -- contrary to the info given by James Renner at the top of this page.
I was born there in August 28, 1948. Do you have a copy of my birth records? I will pay for it if you have it; my parents died.
I just came across this web site because I am adopted and searching for birth and medical records. I was supposedly born on Jan 10, 1947. I may have been born at JMH, or Wadsworth Hosp. The mother that raised me was a private duty RN and worked at many of the hospitals in the NY area. According to her a Dr. Miller delivered me. I had a large Nevus, (dark purple mark), covering the right side of my face. I am African American. I may have been adopted or stolen or just handed off. Both parents who raised me are deceased and I thank all 4 of them for being a part of my life. I would just like to know more about my medical history and if I have any remaining bio. family out there. I've turned out pretty good. I was raised on 159th ST between Amsterdam and B'way. If any one has or knows anyone with any bit of information or hearsay I'd be happy to hear it. Thank you in advance, Namaste, VJ
I was born March 24, 1941 at Jewish Memorial Hospital. I would like to know the name of my father on your records. I am applying for a passport and have had some problems with the birth certificate and the first name my father used on my birth certificate. I need to know what is on your records. According to my mother, there may have been a clerical error because his first name should have been Edward. The last name Gentile is correct. Could you please help me? Thank you, Edward G. Gentile
I just wanted to add to my post of 1/21/2010 that I was delivered by Dr. Zerner on 8/19/1955. My mother is still alive and she remembers him quite fondly.

I was born there on October 31 1976 and was adopted in 1980. I am looking for my birth mother and siblings. I found out through the adoption agency that I had a younger sister who was also adopted.
My mom was Born at Jewish Mem.and adopted in 1952, and I am trying to find her birth records or any records does anyone know where I can go to find them??
I was born there on Feb. 28th, 1942 My Sister was born there on May 23, 1944
One of my cousins was born there in Oct 1951 and I was born there in Dec 1952. My aunt and parents both lived just up Broadway over the river in The Bronx.
The comment above by Nicholas Uribe (December 7, 2010, 11:26 AM), to the effect that the facility was known as "The Jewish Memorial Hospital" long before 1936, is correct. I have in front of me a letter to my father dated Nov. 12, 1923 over the signature of Jacob Carlinger, Superintendant, and typed on stationary under the "The Jewish Memorial Hospital" letterhead, featuring a small inset black & white photo of the building at "Dyckman Street & River Road, New York, Telephone Wadsworth 1006-7-8-9." The letter invited former interns to a meeting two days thence with an eye toward organizing The Jewish Memorial Hospital Alumni Association. Also part of the letterhead are the names Edmund Schwarz, President; Sol. Newman, Vice President; Isidor S. Schweitzer, 2nd Vice President; Karl Schenk, Treasurer; and Joseph Feinberg, Secretary. My father graduated from medical school in New York in 1921, and I myself was born at The Jewish Memorial Hospital two decades later.
I was born in the Bronx Maternity & Women's Hospital in July 6, 1947. I don't have an original copy of my Birth Certificate and the copy (short version) does not include the time of birth. I would like to know where I can get this information.Thank you
I was a gal from the Bronx who found my way to JMH and was lucky to have worked there from Jan of '72 thru closing. ... It was delightful to hear all your comments. Some of you who were born thru the early years of my employment, parent's may have been greeted by me in the Admitting Office when they came in to register for maternity or came in while in labor. I admitted many of your Mom's and joked with them a little to ease their nervousness. At times I would even make guesses of the sex the child they were having would be. Later, after your birth. I visited your mom with a birth certificate worksheet to find out what name she had chosen for you and to see if my guess had been correct on my guess of your sex. It was a very rewarding job and I miss all my co-workers very much and hope all are doing well.
FYI some of you may find some answers by going to www.manhattanboard.com
I was born at jewish memorial hospital on july 27, 1970. I have my original birth certificate,as well as the original envelope it came in. The envelope reads from the the city of new york, department of health, bureau of records and statistics. Hope that helps anyone needing info!
I was born at Jewish Memorial May 1967.
Born at JMH on April 25, 1951. Any others out there? Raised in the Bronx until 1960 then moved to Inwwod on Seaman Ave., not far from the hospital! Sorry to learn of the hospital's closing. Live on the other coast now.

I was born there in July 1950. My sisters were also born there 5 and 6 years earlier. My parents were Christian. As the story goes there was a protracted circumcision argument. The powers that were wanted it. My father didn't.
